Michael Barker is an independent mediator and arbitrator based at Murray Chambers, Perth, Western Australia.
Michael was a Judge of the Supreme Court of Western Australia from 2002 – 2009 and the President of the State Administrative Tribunal of Western Australia from its foundation in 2005 until 2009. From 2009 – 2019, Michael was a Judge of the Federal Court of Australia.
On the Supreme Court his work spanned both civil and criminal jurisdictions. On the Federal Court his work spanned trial and appellate work, from migration to native title, trade practices, industrial law, corporations law, insurance, bankruptcy, insolvency, competition and economic regulation, and consumer law.
Michael was appointed Queens Counsel in 1996 soon after joining the independent Bar in Perth in 1993. Previously he was a partner in the predecessor law firm to the national Australian law firm, Corrs Chambers Westgarth.
From 1981 – 1985, Michael was a member of the Faculty of Law, Australian National University, Canberra.
Michael holds a Bachelor of Laws (with Honours) from the University of Western Australia and a Master of Laws from Osgoode Hall Law School, Toronto, Canada
