Woodsford appoints Steven Friel as Chief Investment Officer

13 November 2015

Woodsford Litigation Funding, a leading third party litigation funder, has announced the appointment of Steven Friel as Chief Investment Officer. He joins us from International law firm Brown Rudnick, where he was a partner in its London office. Steven was previously a partner at DAC Beachcroft and worked in the London and New York offices of Debevoise & Plimpton.

Steven has extensive experience in handling complex disputes, often with an international dimension. His recent work includes acting for bondholders and shareholders in disputes arising out of the restructuring of a number of failed Eurozone banks. Steven’s expertise has been recognised by every annual edition of the Legal 500 published in the last eight years. For commercial litigation work, he is praised as having "the sort of knowledge that one only gets with years of accumulated experience in heavy or complex litigation" and a "strong commercial grip on the relevant legal provisions and financial aspects of cases." For his work in international arbitration, the Legal 500 ranked Steven as "outstanding," and he has been noted as an "experienced practitioner" of banking litigation.

Yves Bonavero, founder and Executive Chairman said: “Our litigation funding business works with clients from around the world, funding the type of large litigation and arbitration for which Steven has developed an outstanding, international reputation. He joins us at an exciting time in our growth, as we strive to become one of the pre-eminent access-to-justice specialists for UK and international commercial enterprises. Steven's expertise and professional network will ensure that we continue to identify and work with clients who have a strong claim, but lack the funding – or the appetite – to fund it alone."

Steven said: “I am delighted to join Woodsford Litigation Funding. The way in which complex commercial litigation and arbitrations are financed has changed dramatically over the past 15 years, a development that I have watched with interest from the perspective of my trans-Atlantic litigation practice. It is clear to me that there is tremendous potential for further growth in the industry, and I am look forward to working with Yves and the rest of the Woodsford team in realising that potential.”

About Woodsford Litigation Funding
Founded in 2010, Woodsford Litigation Funding soon developed a reputation as a leading litigation funding team. Our team blends extensive business experience with legal expertise. Well-known and well-connected, we are quick to understand the financial implications of your case as well as its legal merits. We do not have a "one size fits all" approach - on the contrary, we understand that each partnership is motivated by different priorities.

Woodsford have been and remain founder-members of the Association of Litigation Funders. We can fund claimants’ own costs and adverse costs (including security for costs); our model also enables us to fund defendants’ costs. We invest our own capital. In return for investing in a case, we receive an agreed share of the proceeds.
